Workzone Speed Sensor
Challenge
Workzone workers were exposed to significant safety risks due to drivers travelling at unsafe speeds. Speed reduction programs did not have means of measuring their effectiveness.
Solution
A system has been developed for monitoring speed in construction work zones using off the shelf radar technology and tow behind light towers.
Result
Allows for on site monitoring of the effectiveness of speed reduction programs.
Used to measure occupancy values to see if lane closure times are appropriate to keep a consistent flow of traffic.
Increased data on the speed of vehicles through the work zone.
Measurable data on the occupancy of lanes within a work zone (especially during lane closures).
Remote monitoring of speed with data including time of day and day of the week.
