Marine Way Maintenance Station Aesthetic & Resiliency Improvements
Challenge
The Marine Way Maintenance Station was decades old and has endured well-worn everyday use at the facility and surrounding grounds which were mainly bare areas subject to erosion control and/or fire risk.
Solution
Crews started by identifying roadside materials (plant volunteers, discarded inert material, outdated asset parts, etc.) that could be repurposed at the facility to control erosion, enhance its sightlines, increase its productive uses, and advance pride in our facility. This developed into a cross-team effort to install measures that improved the overall sustainability at the Marine Way maintenance station.
Result
Improved drought tolerance
Improved erosion control
Enhanced fire risk mitigation
Aesthetic improvements and place making
Increased business uses at the facility, including an outdoor eating/meeting area
Diversion from landfills and re-purposes of otherwise discarded materials
