Fixing Broken EV Chargers
Challenge
Of the 47,000 publicly accessible EV charging ports in California, roughly 3,500, or 7 percent, are broken or temporarily unavailable, whether from hardware, software, or vandalism related issues.
Solution
Caltrans developed a template to crowd source input from the private sector on which broken EV chargers across the state were in greatest need of repair and could most easily be fixed without significant site upgrades. Collection of this information will expedite repairs and maximize the benefits of public funds. The template was so effective in streamlining the collection of project information that other states used it in their applications as well.
Result
$63.7 million in funding being awarded to California to repair, replace, and add new EV chargers across the state
Funding will fix more than 20 percent of the broken EV chargers in the state
Caltrans secured 43 percent of federal funding available to fix broken EV chargers
