QuickMap Enhancement for Commercial Vehicle Operators (Truckers)
Challenge
There was no information available in Caltrans QuickMap for the public regarding the movement of commercial vehicles, including longer trucks. Truckers had to use hard copies of truck routes maps to see where they could travel. They had to download the map or print the map and carry it with them while traveling. Truckers also didn't know the location of terminal access and service access ramps, truck escape ramps, and weigh station locations.
Solution
A PDF version of the truck routes maps was converted to an interactive GIS map and more layers were added of locations showing terminal access, service access, truck weigh stations, and truck escape ramps. The layers from the GIS map were integrated into Caltrans QuickMap as "Commercial Vehicles" options.
Result
Helps truckers see a safe route for travel based on their vehicle configurations.
Having this information in QuickMap provides a one location to see traffic, travel, and weather conditions in real-time together.
Helps truckers better plan their trips and avoid congestion and delay.
The mobile version shows users locations in real time.
Improved customer satisfaction, especially for longer truck operators.
Improves the safety and mobility of all users of the state highway system.
