Back Saver for Deck Drains

Challenge 

In previous years crews had to get on their hands and knees to pull out and replace deck drains. Process was slow and puts employees in an awkward position.  

Solution

Caltrans employee, Juventino Rosas took a few old dollies that were headed for the trash and converted them into back savers. These old dollies now pull the deck drains and replace them with little to no effort from the employees. What was once trash is now turned into one of the best inventions for our Bridge crews. 

Prior to the back savers employees were cleaning 12-14 drains a day. Now with the back savers the employees are cleaning 42 drains in a day. No more back pain for the employees.

Result 

• Drains cleaned has doubled from 12-14 per day to 40+

• Employees backs no longer hurt

• The employees feel better pulling drains and are able to pull more drains

• 3x the amount of drains are cleaned
